I'm glad Frances showed me ADOM.

It's a fun little game, even if it's almost impossible to reach the statue to me in the latest version.

I found all the rogue-like games impossible to finish, even as obsessive as I can be. Still, I'd still rather play a good game of angband than spend days going through one of the so-called "RPG" games that combine all the worst elements of turn-based and twitch-based games into a pseudo-cohesive package.

ADOM is easier than most roguelikes, largely because it does it's best to play things straight - no horrible puns, no insta-death attacks, no totally random things that will win or lose you the game on their own.

This is not to say that it's *easy*, per se, only that it's not nearly as frustrating as some.

I think you're assuming that nethack-type games are the rule rather than the exception. With angband, moria, rogue, or ADOM, all the things you said above apply. Nethack and its subvariants are really the only "wacky" roguelikes out there. Even zangband spinoffs with their bazillions of races and chaos knights and pattern-walking are no where near as "cutesy" as nethack.

I've only ever really dealt with nethack and wacky angband spinoffs, so you're probably entirely correct.

I like ADOM.
