I've always thought that the "UFO coverup conspiracy", as full of shit as it is, must be helpful to the US military, because it serves to distract the public from more important (and real) things, such as the development top-secret weapons and experimental aircraft. If you think about it, it's perfect. Nobody is going to care about the development of stealth aircraft or hypersonic propulsion devices if the public is more interested in whether or not the Air Force is hiding alien spacecraft. It must be very handy like that.

It's also very handy in that, with the public busy thinking about UFOs, if they *do* happen to witness either secret friendly military craft, or not-friendly craft on a reconnaissance mission, they think it's a UFO.
