The privacy-enhanced computer display uses a ferroelectric shutter glasses and a special device driver to produce a computer display which can be read only by the desired recipient, and not by an onlooker.
The display alternately displays the desired information in one field, then the inverse image of the desired information in the next field, at up to 120 Hz refresh. The ferroelectric shutter glasses allow only the desired information to be viewed, while the inverse image causes unauthorized viewers to perceive only a flickering gray image, caused by the persistence of vision in the human visual system (as illustrated here). It is also possible to use the system to "underlay" a private message on a public display system.

Background & Objective: The Privacy Enhanced Computer Display is appropriate for situations where a computer display is to be located in a publicly accessible area, but the display itself may show information that should be kept private. Places such as banks (bank balances) hospitals (patient health information), pharmacies (drug information), airline ticketing and airport gate agent stations (passenger and security information) are all candidates for a privacy-enhanced computer display.

And porn. This will be used for porn.

It sure will.

Some libraries, in order to keep people from seeing things that might upset them, have those special screen fixtures that keep you from seeing what's on the monitor unless you're directly in front of it. Of course I think that looking at porn in a library is inappropriate, but since someone may have legitimate research reasons for doing so, some places choose this solution over (invariably inadequate) filtering software.

These are even better. They're like Peril Sensitive Sunglasses™, only not.

3-d.

That's just about the least interesting thing you can do with that technology, considering that every single one of the uses described is already performed for zero cost by facing the screen away from the client, instead of wearing super-expensive dorkware on your face.

The really interesting application for one-image-per-eye tech is one I've already seen demoed; 3-D images. There's a GIS company here in Ottawa that does that kind of thing, and it's supercool.

And, yes, you could use that for porn.
