Lithium, Librium, what's the difference?

Apparently not much, at Brockton Hospital in Boston.

A pharmacist ordered Librium, and antianxiety sedative, instead of Lithium. The maximum safe dose of Lithium is 600 milligrams. The safe dose of Librium is 5 mg. Nurses then administered 300 mg doses of Librium to the patient.

The hospital's autopsy concluded he died of pneumonia.

So, you're sitting at home with your brother, watching America's Most Wanted.

And they profile your brother on the show.

Awkward.

Well, how would *you* protect your 11 foster children?

Won't comment constantly on the cliche list, but...

"A virtual reality program is activated, and the distinction between reality and the program becomes confused or indistinguishable."

eXistenZ and a few others have done a pretty good job of this one, but they gave it a red X.

I suppose no one's going to agree entirely on things like this.

That's not quite the same thing, though. I believe the red X is for "things in the virtual world become real" as opposed to "characters can't tell if they're still in the game or not" - the ACTUAL boundary between real and virtual becomes blurred, not the character's perceptions of the boundary.

Then what about the anime series Lain? I suppose there has to be an exception to every rule, and Lain is brilliantly done despite involving a little girl discovering that she is a "program" meant to join RL and The Net.

anime

No, I think the Big List is correct, and it's irredeemably lame after all.

eXistenZ didn't involve things from virtual reality actually manifesting in the real world. I think they are refering to when people run off the holodeck or when you start VR and suddenly your bad guy is loose on the streets of new york. eXistenZ was a bit more thoughtful than that.

Is it a bad sign when you can think of an example for every one of the little Star Trek logos?

I think it's worse when I read some without Star Trek logos and I was like "Yes they did". *sigh*

Yeah, I thought that was worse, too, which is why I didn't mention it. :)

You have to admit Yul Brynner as a psycho android in Westworld was much better than the silly androids killing people in Star Trek's "Shore Leave" episode, particularly as the tourists who got killed in Westworld were actually dead, not pretend dead.

My favourite part of that movie was the control room - airtight, powered locks with no physical releases that default to "locked" when the power goes out, no battery backups, controls to turn the power on require either power or *not being in the control room*.

That's an EXTRA-SPECIAL kind of engineering fuckup.

Have not seen "Shore Leave", but yeah, Yul Brynner was probably much better.

(Heh. Should watch /Westworld/ again.)

Once again I find myself wishing those sorts of people had all settled down in ... not Ohio, at any rate.
