I prefer the original script:

Panel 1
Captain:
IT'S FUNNY THAT I CAN WORK
SIDE-BY-SIDE WITH A TENTACLED
MONSTER. MY ANCESTORS WOULD
HAVE BEEN HORRIFIED.
Alien:
AH.
Captain:
YES, ANCIENT HUMAN LORE IS FILLED
WITH TALES OF SEA MONSTERS AND SLIMY
CREATURES OF THE NETHERWORLD. IT'S
A FIXATION OF SORTS FOR MY PEOPLE.
Alien:
MM.

Panel 2
Captain:
THE JAPANESE, FOR EXAMPLE, HAD A WHOLE
SUBCULTURE OF ART AND LITERATURE REVOLVING
AROUND SEXUAL RELATIONS BETWEEN HUMANS
AND TENTACLE BEASTS.
Alien:
SO YOU'VE SAID.
Captain:
AH, DID I? THAT'S RIGHT.

Panel 3
Captain:
AND YOU SAID YOU DON'T DO THAT.
NOT EVER.
BUT WHAT ABOUT SPECIAL
CIRCUMSTANCES, SUCH AS...
Alien:
CAPTAIN, YOU'RE ABOUT ONE
RHETORICAL HOP FROM A
SEXUAL HARASSMENT CHARGE.

Dilbert is bad at that. He should have argued using her terms, because by the wording he used, he lost the bet based on his own information.

SPF 4 will by no means prevent a sunburn. But it is, technically, protection.

This just in: Dilbert sucks great heaping bags of dog turds. Film at 11.

Given the discussion he was in, it's possible that he used the word protect in the context of providing complete protection--that is, completely preventing a sunburn, rather than only providing minimal SPF.

I feel for the guy. I've been getting really pissed off at factually inaccurate statements lately.

I can safely say that I have never felt for Dilbert.

But I would say you are correct, and he was using "protect" as shorthand for whatever Lola was babbling about.

I do have to say that Lola is probably one of the best "new characters" in a comic strip in quite some years. But that's still not saying much.
