Bush has picked the second Supreme Court justice: Harriet Miers, formerly his personal lawyer and now White House Counsel.

She has never been a judge.

She has never clerked for the Supreme or an Apellate court.

She clerked for a trial court from 1970-72.

She has never argued before the Supreme Court.

Her only qualification, in fact, appears to be that she thinks Bush is "the most brilliant man I've ever met"

(For those of you hearing about her former leadership of the "gay deprogrammers" Exodus Ministries: That's not correct. She's the former head of Exodus International, which is equally religious but not quite equally loony. EI are a prison-rehab-through-Jesus program, not a gay-rehab-through-Jesus program. She was, however, involved in covering up Bush's lack of national guard service.)

She was also the first woman to head the Texas State Bar(using Texas in this way could be questionable). She's also not a hardcore conservative.

How hardcore of a neo-conservative is she?

She's taken a stance in favor of abortion right, for example.

She has? How is that consistent with: When pastor Ron Key was asked about Miers' views on abortion, he said, "her personal views are consistent with that of evangelical Christians... You can tell a lot about her from her decade of service in a conservative church"?

. . . because someone that considers bush to be "brilliant" is exactly bright enough to be a suppreme court justice.

But Morning Sedition called it. this is exactly what happened with Dick Cheny. Bush asked her to find candidates and she said, "I've reviewed all the candidates and i find that the best person for the job is . . . me."

I suppose the bias never occured to Bush.

On the positive side of things, she's old and uptight enough that even if she is an extremist, she likely won't be on the Court as long as Clarence "Coke Can" Thomas is expected to be. It's true that John Paul Stevens is 85, but he's always struck me as being much more relaxed than most of the other Justices.

Okay, no more posting while sleep-deprived for me.

She's hated by most hardline republicans, which is a point in her favour.

Being hated by the Reich is not a mark of special distinction. It just means you're part of the 99% of humanity that aren't the Reich.
