This reminds me of rumours/myths about fronteerswomen surviving indian attacks that their husbands did not because their steel-and-cotton corsets protected the lungs and vitals from arrows and even some bullets.

I've seen it touted as "fact" that this happened, but no-one's produced names, dates, locations, or really anything specific at all. If any of you out there in WeaselKingLand can do so, I'd be thrilled.

Even the old 'my bible saved my life' (or alternatively my silver cigarette case or whatever else) is hard to credit -- certainly not with modern guns. OTOH, Civil War era long guns (since that's usually what they're told about) used larger caliber, but much lower velocity bullets -- just as deadly, but larger, and therefore more likely to be stopped by any padding. On the gripping hand, the difference between Civil War Era and WWI or WWII era is much smaller than that between modern assault rifles and Napoleonic era, so...

For this story: the name is Helen Kelly, the date is last November (looks like the 9th; it's come up in the news since the guy who shot her was just sentenced), the location is central London, and unless there is a mass conspiracy on the part of UK newspapers to turn up a ridiculous number of hits on a Google for "bra underwire bullet London", I am inclined to believe it. If it just showed up in the Sun, okay, but it's on the BBC as well as a bunch of other places.

Ack1 This I believe. It's the corsets that I'm looking for verification on.

Actually, there was a similar occurance with an archaeologist in South America a few years ago. Apparently when robbers attacked her on the road, the bullet ricocheted off her bra underwire and hit her drivers leg. No-one really believed her either - but who can say? Unless it's happened to you, or you've empirically tested it, how can you say for sure it's not possible? Sometimes that underwire is pretty substantial....

there is a theroy that if the Annastasia survied the mass shooting of her family it would have most likely been the bullets glancing off of steel boning, also I love that the guy got 12 years while here in the us it would have probably just been probation
