Model railroad slums
, in amazing detail. Many more pictures behind the link.

From Making Light, which is worth a click just for the discussion of modelling.

Where's the gun shop?

I swear, certain small towns int he US were literally "Liquor store, pawn shop, gun shop, pawn shop, liquor store, gun shop, army surplus, liquor store..."

I used to try to make realistic model railroad scenery when I was a kid. I did well at making trees and terrain, but never got near as good as the buildings shown on the link. The "in" thing in those days was to model small towns and rail yards along the railroads, not big cities or their commuter trains.

Waterspyder has probably seen a typical small "military town" for a base that employs few civilians. There's one like that just outside Ft. Campbell KY, for instance (no it's not Clarksville TN or Hopkinsville KY).
