Sony on DRM: If you want to play a Sony CD, you don't have any right to expect your computer or CD-player to work the way you expect it to, ever again. Sony's new DRM software, like all DRM software, is poorly-written malware that can and will cripple your computer if you deal with it incorrectly.

That kind of bullshit shouldn't be legal.

And people wonder why I've stopped buying CDs from north america. *so far* my Rammstein CDs aren't cripplewear, but lord only knows how long that'll last.

I wonder if the "shift" hack will work with these, since most of them are designed to be run based off the autoplay file. and if there still can't be ripped, then they don't conform to the Compact Disk standard and someone should report them to Philips, that Sony is miss representing their trademark.

Heh heh. I knew there was a reason I disabled "autoplay" on my system. Though that may make recovering from a hard crash tougher...

Well.. if the record companies actually demonstrated any true concern for "artists' rights," i might be more inclined to support them.. but they have ripped the artists off more than any kid ripping his friends' Cds ever have.

Oh, I think you'll find that there's nothing that says anything about it being a Compact Disc - Digital Audio. At least it's that way with EMI's crippled discs.

then the only recourse it if it's not clearly labeled that it is NOT a CD, since it probably was placed on the same racks as all the CDs...

I suppose that, if you get hold of such a disc by accident, the best thing to do is plug a standalone player into your audio in and rip it that way, then sell it used.
