Medicine has obviously greatly improved when you can be at risk of losing an eye, but not in danger of dying, after being shot with a hunting rifle.

It's possible it wasn't a direct hit, or that it wasn't a hit at all and that's just coming from shrapnel.

It also doesn't indicate *what* he hunts with that rifle. Birds and squirrels could mean it's a very small gun.

Yeah, I figure it's actually either a shrapnel/ricochet injury, or it was really birdshot in a shotgun, not a rifle.
But it's more fun to think of the other possibilities.
