I've probably seen this a thousand times, but I've never really thought about it.

What exactly is the web, if not 'redistribution'?

If I were to take that whole article and post it somewhere without permission, that would be redistribution. Linking it isn't quite the same thing.

One can make a case about proxy servers, however.

I'm not saying that you're redistributing it. I'm certain linking's fine. I'm equally certain that posting it on the web initially is fine.

I'm just wondering whose brainstorm it was that came up with 'it's okay to post this to the web, but not okay to redistribute it'. Because that does not make sense.

Yes, but what about the four servers between me and that website? And the google cache? And the internet archive? And various proxy servers? That's the slightly funny point about it.
