Religious loonies fighting their "war on Christmas" to "restore the traditional meaning of Christmas" are apparently totally unclear on what the traditional meaning of Christmas is.

There's a great book called The Battle for Christmas by Stephen Nissenbaum that goes into more detail about the history of Christmas in the U.S., particularly in the 19th century, and what Clement Clark Moore and Washington Irving (!) have to do with it all.

Christmas used to be quite the rowdy affair, in Europe and in America. That kind of celebration still goes on, in fact—it's just been moved to New Year's Eve.

(Meanwhile, about all I've seen around my Christian place of employment is a lot of strings of lights and a holiday Christmas tree.)
