16-year-old student suspended from school for 1.5 days for being bilingual and answering a Spanish question in Spanish.

More here.

The suspension has been rescinded (after the fact) and an apology has been given, but they still suspended a fluently bilingual student for speaking his native language, in a hallway, outside of class time.

Oh, look, it's in Kansas!

Kansas is indeed making a valiant effort to surpass Florida as the Most Embarassing State in the Union. Perhaps 2006 will be the year!

He said No Problema. An 'a' is the only difference between it and its English counterpart. And he got suspended. Sweet Jesus on a pogo stick what the hell is wrong with people?

Hell, I live in Albuquerque NM, am of Irish/German/Heinz 57 descent, and am a native English speaker, but I lapse in a bit of Spanglish now and then, like "no problema." If I was still in high school, would I be suspended? Makes no sense.

Nevertheless, I do encourage people who natively speak languages other than English to learn English for economic reasons.

Argh. Flashing back to our massive screw-ups with residential schools, that we're (finally, to tell the truth) now paying a pretty penny in pennance for.

-- Steve's still wondering about this persistant need for ethnic cleansing/whitewashing/whatever. If this is part of the human condition, we've got to figure out how to excise it.

Oh, and make them all deaf and dumb, so the only language available is hand gesture.

That oughta learn 'em.

No, then everyone will be arguing over which hand gesture language to use.

American Sign Language! No, Canadian Sign Language! And then you'd have the Quebec language police fining people for not using Lingue Sign Francais on their shop signs... gah. I know a couple of rude gestures that translate fairly widely, though :D
