Making a music CD.
Dec. 20th, 2005 08:38 pmSo. I'm making a hard classic rock CD, and I want suggestions for what to include. I'm looking for music that's great to turn up the radio and drive to. I don't mind duplicating an artist, but no more than 2 from any one person. Mostly, it should have the feel of the late 70s/early 80s hard rock that eventually became heavy metal.
Opening with:
1. Alice Cooper - Hello, Hooray
2. Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train
Other things that really need to be on there:
KISS - Detroit Rock City
Judas Priest - Turbo Lover
Blue Oyster Cult - Burnin' for you
AC/DC - Who Made Who
So. Given this theme and the samples above, what else should go on this CD?

Then another Cooper song. "School's Out" or "No more Mr. Nice Guy"

Date: 2005-12-21 03:12 am (UTC)Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla" might also be nice to drive too, not sure.
And... silly as it sounds, but the other day whilst driving Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me" came on the radio, and it was tons of fun to drive to, but it's not quite the right time period/subgenre, so doubt that suggestion's helpful.
Would "Me and Bobby McGee" by Janis Joplin be right out? On first blush it's a lot more folk-rock-ish or just plain classic rock than heavy metal, and it's a slower song than the metal stuff, but... I dunno how to explain it, it just has the same "feel" in some ways to me. It'd be more for just a mellow, soothing kinda cruising down the highway, though, rather than a song to get your blood pumped up for aggressive driving.
Pink Floyd would in some ways fit under the same heading as the previous song - I could see some of the songs being good for just cruising, but not the harder-driven rock so much. Although maybe "Another Brick in the Wall" or something would work... but meh. I guess overall it doesn't work for driving as much. I wanted to throw them in because I like Floyd, and it's the right genre (more or less) and right time-period, but probably not right for the purpose, sorry.
Otherwise, I'll have to give this more thought. ;)

--> Queen Another One Bites the Dust
I would have suggested Depeche Mode and Marilyn Manson, but I figure those are too recent to meet criterion. My choices aren't really metal... but ACDC's Ballroom Blitz & Highway to Hell are, well, weak, so I'm not going to suggest 'em. >8-}

Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water
CCR - Fortunate Son
Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
The Guess Who - Mississippi Queen
Uh... that's all I got off the top of my head in 25 seconds. I'll think of more.

Guns 'n' Roses - My Michelle
Motorhead - Ace of Spades
As for AC/DC, fuck that song. It's all about Dirty Deeds, mother fucker.

Yeah they're all Clapton, but so whaat? They're as seminal as early Steppenwolf (John Kay invented the term "heavy metal" in Born to be Wild).
Also from the Who: Won't Get Fooled Again.

Date: 2005-12-21 10:30 am (UTC)Foghat: "Fool For The City" (title cut)
Van Halen "Aint talkin' 'Bout Love" (debut album)
Slade: "Cum On Feel The Noize". (from the "Sladest" CD. Yes, I know Quiet Riot did--a complete imitation rip off of-- a cover, but the original packs more punch)
As a matter of fact, Noddy Holder (lead singer for Slade) and Dan McCafferty (vocals for Nazareth) pretty much invented the shredded style of singing that so manhy big-hair metal bands in the 1980's copied. Which brings me to
Montrose: "Bad Motor Scooter" (from the debut album. Sammy Hagar on vocals).
there's more, and I was there, but i forget cause there was lots of drugs too.

Date: 2005-12-21 03:12 pm (UTC)It may be a little late and a little light, but could some Meatloaf get on there? I'm a fan of "Paradise by the Dashboard Light", but "You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth" has a killer opening.

Date: 2005-12-21 10:43 pm (UTC)ZZ Top - "Sharp Dressed Man" - most awesome driving song EVAR
Dire Straits - "Money for Nothing"
Metallica - "Enter Sandman" (anything from the Black album, really)
Aerosmith - either "Love in An Elevator" or "Ragdoll" are my faves
Queen - "Fat Bottomed Girls"
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - "Runnin' Down a Dream"
Billy Idol - "Cradle of Love" or "Rebel Yell", I can't decide which
Guns 'n Roses - "Welcome to the Jungle"
I have more, but they skid too far away from your criteria, I think. Unless someone can make a case for Tears for Fears being hard rock. (Still doesn't change the fact that "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" is an awesome driving song.)
