Sep. 19th, 2004 02:25 amVery interesting article on why it's not only legal for American politicians to deliberately lie outright to voters, but why it's actually *illegal* for American media to *not* carry a political advertisement, even if they know it to be blatantly false.
It's worth noting, given the citings of this article, that there appears to be nothing preventing the media outlet from framing the advertisement with a notice saying "The following is not accurate - here are the correct facts. We are, however, legally obligated to show it in it's entirety and unedited, even though the statements herein are lies."
I think a TV station that did that would be very cool.
