A secret Pentagon study has found that at least 80 percent of the marines who have been killed in Iraq from wounds to their upper body could have survived if they had extra body armor. That armor has been available since 2003 but until recently the Pentagon has largely declined to supply it to troops.

Thank you for posting that first one. I have spoken to people online in the States who I've known for years who have talked about local fundraising events to buy better armor for their local troops (like sons and daughters who were shipped out from Smalltown, USA, so Smalltown raises money to make sure they are fully equipped), because while they know that the troops have body armor, they also know that they do not have the good body armor. And while the US government has it available, they were not handing it out to all of the troops, and especially not to the new ones. When I would tell this to people, they said it was bullshit, and I suspect it was because the propaganda machine said it couldn't possibly be true.
