American law now allows any health-care professional or any instution associated with health care, including *insurance companies*, to refuse to provide abortions, pay for them, or make abortion-related referrals, even in cases of rape or medical emergency.

The bill's text and some comments here.

Yes, that's right. Ectopic pregnancy? You're going to die? Tough. Got a prescription for birth control? Your pharmacist doesn't have to fill it. Got a medically required operation and a prescription for it and all that? Your insurance company doesn't have to pay for it, even if your policy says you're covered.

A friend of a friend was asked (just last night) why most med students get their first internal gynecological examination on a patient who is in the hospital for something completely unrelated and *drugged into unconsciousness*, and hence incapable of objecting: Her answer was "Because women's lives don't matter."

i was thinking exactly that while reading the article. i also wonder if refusing to do an abortion, in cases where the mother's life is in danger, violates the Hypocratic Oath?

No, because there's (for those with whom this is a problem) an inherent conundrum here: which life do you attempt to save? Which life is worth more?
