How Conservatives Argue: A Case Study

Ignore the source and just read the article. It applies to conservatives, fundies, foil-hatters, furries, fluffybunny pagans, fishmalks... and you know, all of those things but the first one start with "f". Maybe there's something to that.

I would have put this person on my ignore list before the encyclopedia part. I couldn't keep reading after the encyclopedia part, either. Eeegh.

White Wolf RPG called Vampire. One of the Clans is Malkavian, "malk" for short, whose shtick is that they're all deeply insane in one way or another. They're supposed to be fundamentally broken, creepy predatory people. In the hands of the majority of the RPG target audience, this leads to characters who are best exemplified by the following "joke":

Q: How many Malkavians does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: FISH!

Hence, fishmalk. Irredeemably stupid character and player.

Ah, the "funny" Malkavian type. Right, I'm aware of them, just never heard them referred to by that name...

Like a funny-hat Malkavian.

Except instead of conveying insanity through the deeply subtle and nuanced roleplaying technique of "Look! I have a funny hat!" they convey it through the deeply subtle and nuanced roleplaying technique of "Look! I have a fish!"

(I personally like Malkavians. A lot. I just have not seen them played well very often.)

The one V:tM campaign I took part in, I considered attempting to play a Malkavian, but figured that I couldn't do it justice. I never did manage to play more than a couple of times. Some day, I'm going to find a Vampire game that isn't LARP'd, and isn't full of goth weenies.

*sigh* I've tried. To be brutally honest, I probably *didn't* do it justice, but I like to think I didn't do it justice more in the "simply not a good enough roleplayer" sense that would also apply if I tried to play a dazzling sophisticate than in the "didn't create a character and personality and pick up the DSM IV and try to understand what the insanity would mean and not use it as an excuse to be silly" sense.

I will play them if given the opportunity, though, unless the ST is atrocious and possibly even then.

That would have been funny except ... and isn't that how many surrealists does it take to change a light bulb - a fish? confused ...

For surrealists, in a joke, it's funny.

For characters in a serious RPG who are supposedly not sane in a serious way, it's imbecilic.

No.

It takes two surrealists. One to fill the bathtub full of power tools and one to hold the giraffe/paint the giraffe blue.

Jesus Christ. Does it *hurt* to teach yourself not to think, so you can make arguments that stupid?
