So. I just got back from seeing Hostel, the latest movie "presented by" Quentin Tarantino.

I cannot say enough about this movie. Seriously, if you get a chance to watch this? Go see Underworld: Evolution instead. It will be a deeper, more rewarding, more entertaining experience. Hostel combines the sheer class of House Of 1000 Corpses, the upbeat mood of The Blair Witch Project, the award-winning acting of Plan 9 From Outer Space, and an attention to graphic detail last seen in Ray Liotta's final appearance in Hannibal.

I had a free ticket, and still demanded my money back. Do not waste your money. Eating lint strand-by-strand is a more productive use of your time.

I think I developed a phobia of blowtorches because of Hostel....

...I'm just sitting here trying to figure out why it *didn't* disturb me a lot more than it did. I wanted to complain to the special effects guy about that scene--the bad-mayonnaise thing just rang falser than using mealworms for maggots.

I don't get grossed out much by gore in movies, but I did for the seen in question... yick.

I liked Underworld: Evolution, thanks. Just like its predecessor, it's total cotton candy for your brain. Quit looking for deep meaning and great film making horror and action flicks. It might happen on occasion, but in general, that's not why they get made. Now, I have no intention of seeing Hostel, but that had more to do with the fact that the ad campaign focused so heavily on the film makers than the actual end product that it couldn't even meet the standards set by cotton candy for substance (and remember kids, cotton candy is spun sugur, it's mostly air).

I'm not looking for deep meaning or great filmmaking. I'm saying that in comparison to Hostel, Underworld 2 has deep meaning and is great filmmaking.

(I hadn't seen any ads or reviews of Hostel. I was going because I had a free ticket and someone who *did* want to go, and I don't normally object to horror movies. They're dumb, but a mostly harmless kind of dumb.)

i am glad hostel kept the promises it made: gore, gore and gore

we had free tickets to see the first underworld, and damn near walked out half-way through, but kept thinking "it has to get better, right?"

I was wishing I'd brought a book.

(Still think Kraven looked like the bastard lovechild of Chris Jericho and Prince Humperdink.)

It had moments. Unfortunately, they were mere moments scattered in a wasteland of blah. I still can't believe the ending. Eesh.

Careful consideration of the new trailer and the original movie lead me to conclude that I would rather watch Motley Crue's Girls, Girls, Girls video than catch /Evolution/.

It is more honest about the eye candy, does not fail to live up to the standards of acting the medium requires, has a better soundtrack, and is actually in colour.

But it's also not two hours long.

And no, I do NOT want to hear it on infinite repeat for two hours.
