Most Overlooked Band Ever
Sep. 29th, 2004 11:32 pmPersuant to another discussion, I've come up with the competition for Most Overlooked Band of all time.
The rules: The band must be one whose songs and singer are famous, for songs by this band, but where nobody remembers the band, only the singer.
For example, Wings is not on this list because, while relatively few people know Wings compared to the number who know Paul McCartney, McCartney isn't famous for Wings songs. The Experience *are* on the list, because everyone knows their frontman and their songs.
You "vote" by telling me which of them you know the singer of, and who he/she is. If you've never heard of *either* of them after I tell you who the famous one is, your "vote" on that band doesn't count. No google-fu - that's not the point. This is just about what YOU know.
Again, for example, I say "Wings". If you know who the famous guy from Wings is, you say "Paul McCartney". If you don't know, you say "I don't know", and I tell you it's McCartney. If you have no clue who McCartney is, then it doesn't count against you that you don't know Wings.
Seems simple enough, right?
The Entrants:
The Wailers
The Experience
The E Street Band
The Blackhearts
Generation X
The Destroyers
The Heartbreakers
The Banshees
Big Brother and the Holding Company
The Miami Sound Machine
The Crickets
The Stooges
Oingo Boingo
The Amboy Dukes
Two Late Additions:
The Mothers Of Invention
Crazy Horse
Edit: The comments give the answers. Don't read them until you've made your guesses.

The only other band on that list I've even heard of is Oingo Boingo, but I don't know their singer.

I know them all except Generation X, The Crickets, The Amboy Dukes, and The Mothers of Invention. I thought I knew Oingo Boingo's (and should have), but I found that I didn't when I looked up the spelling of the guy I thought was the singer. So include that one in the "I didn't know" column too.

Then I have heard of him...
