A full copy of Cryptonomicon, online.

Oddly enough, not the only one I found. Just the best-formatted one.

Pretty interesting, but what possessed you to search for this?

A reference to the story of the dead US soldier whose body was dumped where it would float ashore in German territory, with a briefcase full of faked plans for a fake invasion of Italy.

I was trying to remember if it was a true story or not. I recall it being so, but I couldn't find an authoritative reference on it without a name, and I knew Stephenson had included it, so I looked for Stephenson.

My conclusion: Private Hott, Stephenson's character who was dumped with the fake information, does not seem to appear anywhere outside Cryptonomicon - so, if the story is true, Stephenson changed the name.

Based on a true story. But it were a UK Operation, codenamed Mincemeat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Mincemeat) and filmed under the title "The Man Who Never Was".
