Jan. 31st, 2006 03:52 pmUS Army Colonel testifies that in the US Army in Iraq, female soldiers are dying of dehydration by refusing to drink any liquids after 3 or 4 in the afternoon. Why? Because then they wouldn't risk having to go to the latrines after dark, for fear of rape by the male soldiers. When he learned that this was happening, what did the commander of US forces in Iraq do? He order them to stop reporting it, of course - no cause of death listed in the reports, no mention of the gender of the soldier, no indication that this is happening for a reason.
She also testified that there was an 800 number women could use to report sexual assaults, but no one had a phone, and no one answered that number. Any woman who successfully connected to it would get a recording. Even after more than 83 incidents were reported during a six-month period in Iraq and Kuwait, the 24-hour rape hot line was still answered by a machine that told callers to leave a message.
