British 1st Mechanised Brigade expected to deploy to Iraq with a young Lieutenant by the name of Henry Mountbatten-Windsor.

There's no beer and cocaine in Iraq so we know the Bush family won't send anyone, but it's good to see that at least one family with connections doesn't completely shirk responsibility in favour of sending the poor in their place.

That should be Harry, rather than Henry. Good on him, in any case.

Couldn't find the family name beyond "Windsor" in a quick search. Thanks.

And I just typo'd "Windsor" as "Windows" three times in a row. Four if you count the one time in this sentence. I think I'm a geek.

Harry is a diminutive for Henry. Don't ask me why a two-syllable name needs a two-syllable diminutive, I ain't posh.

My sister is going to call her kid Jack, I've tried to tell her it's not a name, but is short for Johnathan, she won't believe that one either...

It is widely used as both, thus it is usable as either.

Just like my name 'John' is not short for Johnathan.

Well, shit. I thought Harry was a diminutive for Harold. Thanks for the correction (and to Roy, also).

Fair enough.

But can you tell me why Peggy is a diminutive of Margaret? I've *never* been able to figure that one out.

No idea personally, found this with google:

MY Gran is called Margaret, never heard her referred to as Peggy, although I had a great-aunt that was. Naming practices are weird.

The Victoria -> Tolly shift is another one that always confused me.
