Mike Hoye provides Ways To Make PDFs Not Suck for everyday use and viewing.

The short version:

Get Firefox.
Get the PDF-Download extension for Firefox, allowing you to choose to open PDFs in the browser, convert to HTML, or download to your PC, on the fly.
Get Foxit Reader, which is just like Adobe Reader but teeny and not bloated and fast.

There's a coincidence. I was flicking through a back issue of .net this morning, saw mention of Foxit Reader...

Still, yes. Damn good info and worth passing on!

I've owned this PC for months now. Still haven't installed Reader. Only installed Open Office last week as well.

However, the pdf-download extension is sheer genius, I thank you sir.

This PDF Creator also doesn't suck, in case you previously needed Adobe Pro for that. It's probably not quite as pretty, but gets the job done for printing to PDF.

*downloads Foxit* Well! This certainly handles my 250MB bookmarked-up-the-wazoo PDF more gracefully than Adobe does!

Sweet!

My curiosity is getting the better of my cringe reflex - why do you have a 250Mb .pdf?

instead of being exported as text, like a sane document, it's just a series of rasters. eegh. Searchable, if you count searching a (Rather extensive) set of bookmarks. However, it's a reference that I use heavily, so I suffer through it and am slooooooowly "OCRing" it using my MK1 Eyeball (Ultra corrective lense edition).
