The American Association of Petroleum Geologists is presenting its annual journalism award this year to Michael Crichton, the science fiction writer whose latest book, "State of Fear," dismisses global warming as a largely imaginary threat embraced by malignant scientists for their own ends.

"It is fiction," conceded Larry Nation, communications director for the association. "But it has the absolute ring of truth."

I read State of Fear while stuck in O'Hare Airport for twelve hours.

As a novel, it completely sucked. Flat characters, stupid plot, horrible dialogue, etc.

As a science lecture, it was pretty interesting. He makes a surprisingly strong case for global warming being bullshit. Of course, I would like to see someone make a parallel argument in the opposite direction, as I suspect that would be equally as compelling.

Does anyone take this organization seriously? Including themselves?

The 'global warming is a lie' people always get me pissed off. Probably something to do with my dad being an atmospheric chemist. The media always tries to present it "equal", but most scientists in the field (ie, not geoligists, but climatoligists, atmospheric chemists, meteroligists...) agree that it's real. Strange, that most of those who say it's not true, are in the pay of the petrolium companies...
