Oh, THIS will be fun.
Feb. 17th, 2006 02:04 pmAnd I've got to drive home in this.
The short version: three people dead, five more with serious injuries, so far. 416 and 417 both completely blocked in multiple locations (all outside the city, so far) and police are asking drivers to stay off them. At least 50 cars involved in just two of the accidents.
Temperature was above freezing all night, with rain. It's currently -15 and dropping, with 70kph wind gusts and snow. It's expected to hit -30 by tomorrow, with a layer of solid ice with a dusting of snow covering it all.
If you don't have a life-threatening emergency, go home and DO NOT LEAVE.
EDIT: Another story. Beware of ugly and stupid ads. 17 is closed, 417 from March Rd all the way to Pembroke is closed.
EDIT#2: The highways in the city itself were in quite good condition, although non-major routes are icy. I'm home safe.

Date: 2006-02-17 08:50 pm (UTC)Nearby restaurant? One that involves minimal risk of meeting other drivers?
(Don't mind me, I worry.)

Date: 2006-02-17 07:58 pm (UTC)Stepped outside after Calc, took three steps. Wind started blowing me backward on the slush-now-turned-to-glare-ice. Stepped back inside.
Today, I learned to navigate the tunnels at Carleton. ;)
I really have to congratulate whoever designed the library / Dunton Tower / Azraeli Theatre section of campus. It's gotta be the textbook-perfect def'n of a wind tunnel. :P I watched students pulling themselves along the fence to get between Tory and the library. One girl tried to cross the little park in front of the library, and got upended by a gust of wind. Ouch. :/
