Prudhoe Bay gets some kind of chemical spillage on a more-than-daily basis, this one is noteworthy only for being larger than usual. It's not directly creating any oil-covered-animal photo opportunities, so it's not getting much media attention.
I have heard about it. I saw it on CNN, maybe last week. BP is in some trouble, and is supposedly being forced to shut down that entire pipeline until they have gone over the entire thing to check for weakness. Apparently, they had not been maintaining it properly, and didn't even notice the leak for a few days.
Like when they suspect a shortage might occur, and then wehn the shortage occurs, and then again once the oil shortage oil hits the refinery, and then again when it comes out of the refinery.
Oil shortage my ass. If there were a real shortage causing inflation, then the companies (Exxon/Esso, Shell, BP) wouldn't all have reported record profits last year. Not to mention companies like Husky Energy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Husky_Energy) have massive amounts of reserves.
(If anyone really wants me to, I can find the proper news articles when I'm at home)
It made headlines on NYT last week shortly after it happened, maybe a week later? But no pictures or big deal made about it. Just some BP oil line infrastructure stuff that they're concerned about...

The area does seem kind of small, though---one hectare, 100m by 100 m. Which is a minor relief.
