6:15 AM (foolish inferior German time - what kind of country has the sun come up at midnight?)

I am mostly certain that this is Thursday, March 9th.

Despite their superior roadsign technology, I may have to re-evaluate my assertion that the Germans are a civilised people - they apparently don't believe in making hot water available for showers.

I'm sure this is meant to be "bracing" or somesuch.

Maybe it's just something they do to foolish foreigners as a prank, like sheep's eyeballs, monkey's brains, and Guantanamo Bay. That makes it more civilised again. It just means I need revenge. When they come to Canada, I will give them Screech and poutine. That will teach them.

6:30AM
I have just been given a bottle of "Thannhauser Mineralquelle - Cola Mix". It is basically cola with orange and lemon juice. This is not a wimpy little amount of citrus like there is in North American beverages like Pepsi Twist or Diet Coke With Soap (known to the unwary as "Coke with Lime"). No, this is a case where the orange and lemon are as strong a flavour as the cola itself.

Those wacky Germans.

I am receiving strange looks because I am up before the staff of the place where I am staying.

[Ed: Being lazy with this update. Next vacation post will have more pictures, since later on this day I visited Schloss Neuschwanstein.

(Look familiar, anyone?)]

Didn't they use exterior shots of it for a vampire movie?

Well, I know that Neuschwanstein was the inspiration for Disney's Cinderella's Castle. That might be what he's referring to.

That was what I was gonna say, though it's also been in all sorts of movies. Also in a Neil Gaiman book, if I recall correctly.

Did you get to visit the grotto beneath?

Mad King Ludwig was a loon, but in a good way.

Thou lucky basteesh... so jealous...

Ja, that castle's been used in movies (Chitty, Chitty, bang-Bang being only one), computer games and art a LOT, as well as being part of the inspiration for the Disney castle. It's an icon for folks that've never heard of it, because the image has become so pervasive...

No ice in drinking water either. :) Maybe Germans just embrace elemental truth .

They don't drink water in Germany.

It's true. He told me so.

About the cola...

When my dad lived in Germany, he picked up a taste for a popular beverage there - coke & orange juice, half & half. I guess now they just save people the effort of mixing them... not my cup o' tea.
