Extra fingers and toes are one of the more common birth defects, since they're generally a dominant trait.

How good are they typically at controlling the fingers? Just as good as we are with our four+thumb, or does fine motor control suffer?

My understanding has been that quite a few people are born with a sixth finger but its usually lopped off right after birth because it isn't realy attached right and won't function as well as the others. A friend of mine has six toes on each foot.

Some of the superfluous fingers are, yes, but many are perfectly fine, like this 10 year old gentelmans. The big issue is not "poorly anchored" but "Social pressure", and the minor annoyance of not having anything designed for 6 fingered hands. Gloves, for instance. Mitts aren't going to fit properly, as the hand is wider with an extra finger. Anything with a moulded grip for comfort is extra uncomfortable etc...

Not sure it's worth mutilating the kid for. Stronger argument can be made for the social pressure, but that still makes me eeengish.

This kid's metacarpals seem to articulate surprisingly well with his carpals. Is there any information about weather this kid can use all six fingers? Looks like his sixth finger is somewhat rotated at the end, too.

It wan't till I read the comments I noticed this person has/had 6 fingers. I kept looking for breaks or abnormal bone growths. The extra digit seems to have addapted - I don't see why it should be removed unless it causes some phyisical/psychological pain. It wouldn't fit in normal gloves, but most instruments you would either not use it or addapt the insrument a little.

In high school, one of my friends' dads had a bifurcated thumb. It was a quite shock the first time I noticed it.
