I'm thinking they might have been treed by something. At least they seem to be all watching something on the ground that isn't the photograph taking dude...
All I can think of is the story of the cat that went up in a tree and supposedly never came down. The story goes that she had plenty of company because she had several litters of kittens while up in the tree. And I keep thinking this is a picture of the cat and a couple of the litters.
