Meeeeaanwhiiiiillle, there was a story in the local paper maybe a week or so ago about how some towns, particularly in the south, are rescheduling Halloween becuase the 31st falls on a Sunday, and that's God's day, and not the Devil's.

I love how they neglect to mention that Halloween is a holy day in many Christian denmominations - All Hallow's Eve often finds the devout at a special service in which the names of members who died the preceeding year are read out and prayers are offered for them.

I really hate fundamentalists. Which is a terrible thing, as my path does not espouse hatred, but fuck it all, these ignoramuses deserve it.

In fact, it's arguable that the association of the holiday with the dead is largely a Christian influence. Samhain among the pre-Christian Celts seems to have primarily been a harvest festival. (This is one of those chicken-and-egg questions, though, since the culture left little in the way of written records.)

Also, that second link—I don't know a single witch, Wiccan, Pagan, or what have you who is offended by Halloween. Then again, I try not to hang out with people who have their sense of humor surgically removed when they join the ranks of the heathen.
