"A Dutch artist has made a gun out of her own skin," the Globe and Mail reported in April 2004. "Joanneke Meester allowed surgeons to hack a 20-centimetre patch from her stomach which she then used to cover a tiny three-by-six centimetre gun made of plastic. The 38-year-old said this artwork underlined her 'concern at the rising level of violence in society.' She added that she had to use her own skin 'otherwise it would lose its expressiveness. It is easy to shoot someone until you realize it is skin that is being pierced.'"
