"Fairy lore has survived for centuries, partly because it arose among Celtic people who historically would rather lose a limb than a good story, partly because it is infinitely adaptable to all times and ages, and partly, and most sickeningly, because fairies have an eternal appeal to the vast swathes of every female generation who love their ickle-bitty dresses and their iridescent wings and their flowery bowers. Rational argument becomes sodden and useless upon contact with minds so wet, alas."

Fraggle Rock is available on DVD? Why didn't anybody *tell* me?

(Mokey was cool. I liked Mokey. And Uncle Matt's postcards.)

Perhaps, but I preferred it when fairies were rather nasty, or at least tricky to deal with.

Read somewhere that one reason Tolkien's elves turned out the way they did was that he was sick of fairies being turned into these twee little things for children's stories. They're much more interesting when they're morally questionable.

This line is great:

...partly because it arose among Celtic people who historically would rather lose a limb than a good story...
