Once again, Americans: The First Amendment in Bush's America *only* applies when you're saying things that the Religious Reich approve.

Or that I implied that this happened and was encouraged because of the attitude of the government and the real cops in that country?

Well, you and I are graduates of a University where the same type of overreaction could happen. Universities are always a little loony in some way, which is nice, because it's why they are usually agitators for change.

Part of the problem with having intelligent discourse about the Bush administration is that as time has gone on, everything has become his fault. There are enough things that are his fault, that I can't see what it accomplishes for a "hysterical left" to emerge to confront the "religious right", neither having much basis in reality.

Put another way, not every encroachment on the first amendment is a result of Bush. Or more generally, not all manifestations of stupidity are logically linkable.

I mean, religious reich? Do you think the overzealous rentacops at UoF are doing this for religious reasons? It just doesn't come out like that to me at all.

I didn't blame Bush for this. I blamed "Bush's America", which is a generalised term for the county to our south where a disturbing majority of the people hold the belief that their rights really aren't important because only bad people have something to hide.

And I don't think the cops are doing this for religious reasons. I think that there is a vast prevalence of religious opinion and influence in the USA, and that, whether an individual is religious or not, this lobby's influence greatly impacts what those who are stupid and prone to overreaction will overreact ABOUT.

Ugh. Kampus Kops Barney Fifing their way into a "real" crime, never noticing the ammendments they step on.

I watched a TV show on the discovery channel where they convicted and sentenced 4 men to jail time for a murder that was proven to be committed by one man. The other three had absolutely nothing to do with it. Their crime? They knew the woman that was murdered and when the police took them in for 'questioning' and over the 24 hour period during which they interrogated and intimidated them (we're talking 'men' under 21 which in my book puts them in the very young men category) the police repeatedly LIED to the men and told them that they had DNA evidence putting them in the apartment at the time of the murder, that they had enough to convict them and that if they confessed the jury would go easier on them than they would if the held out and made them go to court. This was all done before they found the real killer. But after finding the guy that did it, the cops said - hey, these guys cofessed so they have to do time.
