Of course, those same machines, when told to vote straight-ticket Republican, tended to mark "no vote" in the Presidential race.
If you voted straight-ticket, which is the first option on the screen, and then pressed enter instead of scrolling down past the last positional votes to a referendum question and the Next button, it changed your votes to the next available selection and then proceed. For straight-ticket Demos, this is Republican. For straight-ticket Republicans, this is "No choice".
