Half the merit of this game is learning to count cash. Soon it will be marketed as Lazy Man's Monopoly, with a fat Parker-Brothers guy in a recliner with a remote.
Not just (or even at all, as far as I've seen) fundraisers, they make localised versions to make a profit. For some $bucks your whole street of shops can band together and buy $smallnum monopoly sets with Butcher Johnson in place of the Boardwalk, etc.
But yeah, Monopoly overseas has *always* been localised. It has to be, you have to translate the thing, after all. The Dutch version has always been the 8 major cities, with Amsterdam being the most expensive and "Our Village" being the least expensive. AFAIK the US is the only country where they've based the street names for all across the country on street names in some random unimportant non-city, it's usually the capital or something similar. If they were selecting for the US today you'd probably get New York names, or possibly DC or LA or SF. Certainly not Atlantic City.

Hell if I know anymore. I'm going to play with rocks.
