*grin* I am actually mildly amused by the fact that their section on "Splitting the molecule" was actually covered in The Fantastic Voyage, where they quite explicitly acknowledge that neither removing molecules nor shrinking the distance between subatomic particles works; in the one case, you end up with a man the size of a mouse with a brain the size of a mouse's, and in the other, you end up with a man the size of a mouse who drops right through the table, the floor, possibly the floor beneath...
The movie handles this by explaining that they are doing neither; they are actually shrinking the atoms and molecules. The how of it (thank you, Roddenberry) is not explained. This may be why it is unimaginable to the author of the article (not that I can fault him, as it was apparently unimaginable to the author of Fantastic Voyage as well).
Still, it's interesting and pleasantly non-condescending. Thanks.
