Virginia used to occaisionally have a 'bad' year for tent catepillars. As you were hiking in the woods you could hear the sound of rain drops, except it wasn't raining. It was catepillar pee. There were so many caterpillars it sounded like a light spring rain. Except it gave me the creeps and made me long for an unbrella.
I remember them when I was growing up in Maryland. I don't think I ever experienced caterpillar pee, but I recollect that I thought they were really gross. Worse than 17-year locusts even.
When the ciquedas came out of hibernation in Columbus, I didn't get the creepy crawlies but the sound was absolutely grating. I wish I'd gotten a decibel meter out on the worst days to see how loud it really was.
Eeeaaaagh. I was in Australia when their cicadas came out. Not only was it louder than highway street traffic (guestimate therefore places a full cicada chorus at 120 decibels) but the horrible things look like giant, hammer-headed, red-eyed horseflies. And are realy horrible fliers.
