This is largely a test of logjam working on my laptop.

Anyone know how of a good way to get a MS Visual Basic program to compile and run for Ubuntu, without my having to download every last compiler in the libraries, without knowing anything about any of them, and trying them one after another? Yes, I have the source code for the program.

I'm sure you have a reason, but I have to ask: Why do such a thing? Is the VB app of any appreciable size? Maybe a port to Gambas would be easier. There are also some tools out there that will produce glade files and C/C++ files out of a VB project.

Because there's a VB app written for Windows that I want to run on my laptop, and as of five or six hours ago my laptop runs Ubuntu linux, not XP.

And no, I'm not setting it up for dual boot. That would be cheating.

I *could* just use the app on my desktop and put the output on my laptop, but that's less than optimal.

All I really want is to run it on Ubuntu. I really don't care if I have to translate it to C first, except that I don't want to manually rewrite it, since it's a big program, written by an amateur, that was up past version 3 when he stopped developing it. It's not a pretty sight when you look under the hood.

If you can compile that on a Windows box, you might be able to get it to run under Wine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine_%28software%29).

Well I'll be. I didn't know REALBasic had gone cross platform. Makes sense with Apple's move to Intel processors though.

Short version: A lot of work.

Okay, thanks. I might do that, just not tonight.

Yeah, it is a lot of work.

I got it to work at the office, but it was largely unreliable. I found that if I rewrote the VB apps it worked better for some reason.
