Judge rules that by destroying material evidence despite acknowledged obligation to preserve it and trying to claim it was automatically deleted in a manner inconsistent with reality, defendant was acting in bad faith and with contempt for court and the judicial process and deserves to be punished accordingly.
(Do I think the RIAA should be proceeding the way it is? No. That doesn't mean that I think doing something as boneheaded as flagrantly violating your legal responsibilities, such as complying with judges' orders, should be sanctioned. Two wrongs, and all.)
