"Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine"
. Shown above is the engine block and the main shaft, and if you count, you'll find it's a 10 cylinder engine. Built by The Aioi Works of Japan's Diesel United, Ltd.

The cylinder deck. Each cylinder displaces 1820 liters.

And what does this thing push?

One of these.

Kinda makes you wonder what's in an oil supertanker...

Same sort of thing, container, bulk, tanker, they're all limited by the same canals in size (Panamax, Suezmax, etc.), and they use the same sort of propulsion system (single large screw driven by a single Fucking Large engine).

Biggest supertankers according to wikipedia are 500-650.000 long tons, which google calc says is up to 660k metric tonnes. The world's largest container ship (from wp again), the Emma Maersk (by a long margin) displaces about 150 tonnes, most other supercontainercarriers are in the 100k tonne range.

I suspect that tankers just don't need the immense power to weight ratio of container ships, which get nearly a horsepower per the equivalent weight of a family car.

Hey, we SAW one of those things in the Nagasaki harbor. It was so big that I mistook it for part of the city at first.

As my dad says it, if you can't stand up straight in the crankcase, it's not a real engine.
