A guardrail burns along the Angeles Crest Highway as a wildfire approaches La Canada, Calif.

That is eerily pretty, in such a catastrophic way.

My reaction too.

I seem to be prone to that reaction, though. I remember thinking, while driving through the Canberra 2003 bushfire, "Cool, I'm in a Hieronymus Bosch painting". (This may require calibration, I'm a rural firie and, therefore, already halfway down the road to pyromania.)

I hope that the timber isn't treated with arsenic.

Oh, they use wood for the guardrail posts there? That explains why it's burning. The ones over here pretty much invariably have steel posts.

I don't know.

It looks like wood, though, particularly where the fire has eaten in a bit and the coals are glowing (second from right). And if it was hot enough to burn metal, then the rail would be burning, too.
