I seem to be prone to that reaction, though. I remember thinking, while driving through the Canberra 2003 bushfire, "Cool, I'm in a Hieronymus Bosch painting". (This may require calibration, I'm a rural firie and, therefore, already halfway down the road to pyromania.)
I hope that the timber isn't treated with arsenic.
It looks like wood, though, particularly where the fire has eaten in a bit and the coals are glowing (second from right). And if it was hot enough to burn metal, then the rail would be burning, too.
