I feel bad about the chick, but I'm semi-amused semi-puzzled by the person who a) orchestrated this, b) did post the results to cute_overload even after things went south, and c) did not post a reassurance after the second photo, even though commenters in cute_overload are openly asking for it, which makes me believe that things went even souther, which makes me wonder more about item b).

I'm also puzzled by cute_overload people asking reassurance. Instead of just twitching, like I did, a little.

Didn't you know that all cute things are vegetarians? That's why they're so baffled. Because puppys don't eat other animals and neither do fluffy dogs. Just big scary dogs.

I imagine that in the next consecutive photo, the little shitbeast-dog has begun to chew..... slowly.

But litle shitbeast dogs don't do anything slowly. They twitch and yap and snap. I'm thinking some additional snapping happened.

snap-snap! Some crunching.

I'm a little confused about the "things went south" comment, as that is not a chick in distress at all.

It's relaxed and calm, rather than calling out, or arching its kneck, or kicking it's legs, or any of a number of other things designed to free it. It's just kinda hanging out there. I doubt it's entirely amused by the situation, but it's not frightened.

Part of why it seems a little flattened is that it's pointed belly forward, rather than sideways like in the first shot.

The other part is that baby chickens are made mostly out of air - they're like persian cats: all fluffy outer coating concealing a very unfluffy little mass in the middle. Have a look at a picture of a newly hatched chick, while it's still all sticky and wet - they're actually shockingly scrawny underneath.

So no, it's not physically being crushed, and no, it doesn't look particularly traumatized. My guess is the dog developed the habit of picking up the chick(s?) and carying them around, either as favorite toys or puppy-substitutes, and the owner decided to take a photo.

Just want to add that I've actually raised chickens, and as an abnoxious chicken-obsessed child-beast, I've done my share of picking both adult and baby chickens up and running around with them. Hens are pretty solid underneath the feathers. Chicks are almost nothing.

Anyone who doesn't expect a pomeranian to bite anything near it has never been close to a pomeranian they don't live with.

(But that could just be my fear of small dogs talking)

Poor little chick.
