Calling it a "distraction," U.S. delegates worked to expunge the issue of climate change from the United Nations action plan being readied for adoption at a global conference to reduce natural disasters worldwide.

Scientists say global warming is likely to stir up more disastrous weather events, such as hurricanes and droughts, as the century wears on. But the deputy U.S. delegation head told reporters the subject is too "controversial" for the World Conference on Disaster Reduction.

In its preamble, the action plan draft says climate change is one factor pointing toward "a future where disasters could increasingly threaten the world's economy, and its population." Other passages call for strengthening research into global warming and for clear identification of "climate-related disaster risks."

The U.S. move to delete the passages, an effort backed by Canada and Australia, is opposed by the 25-member European Union, a strong supporter of the Kyoto agreement, and by poorer countries potentially imperiled by the intensified storms, rising ocean waters and other effects foreseen with climate change.

Scientists have found the first example of a male animal that wins a mate by CROSS-DRESSING.

Male giant Australian cuttlefish outnumber females by four to one - so the girls are picky.

To compete, wimpy fellas hide their fourth arms - a male characteristic - and change colour to copy the females' mottled skin.

Then they trick their way past the female’s partner and often succeed in mating with her.

The only trouble is that other dominant males sometimes get frisky with THEM.

US scientists in Massachusetts said: "We found female mimickers could successfully deceive the consort male."

Canadian military to allow gay weddings on bases.

Bad news: I now need a new excuse if I am to dodge any upcoming draft.

Good news: A draft in Canada? You've got to be kidding. We chose to *not* elect the rabid ignorant rednecks, thankyouverymuch.

Satellite goes missing - with it goes all telephone and internet linkups for ten Pacific countries.

In what global satellite operator Intelsat calls "an extremely rare event", its $100 million ($131 million) IS-804 orbiting spacecraft moved out of its programmed alignment and was lost on Saturday.

The loss left the Pacific Island nations of Cook Islands, Western Samoa, Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Niue, Vanuatu, Tokelau, Tuvalu, Tonga and the US territory of American Samoa without communications links to other states, Telecom NZ said yesterday.

Other countries, including New Caledonia, Tahiti, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, East Timor, Vietnam, Korea and Saipan were also affected but could plug into back-up systems.
