Satellite goes missing - with it goes all telephone and internet linkups for ten Pacific countries.

In what global satellite operator Intelsat calls "an extremely rare event", its $100 million ($131 million) IS-804 orbiting spacecraft moved out of its programmed alignment and was lost on Saturday.

The loss left the Pacific Island nations of Cook Islands, Western Samoa, Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Niue, Vanuatu, Tokelau, Tuvalu, Tonga and the US territory of American Samoa without communications links to other states, Telecom NZ said yesterday.

Other countries, including New Caledonia, Tahiti, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, East Timor, Vietnam, Korea and Saipan were also affected but could plug into back-up systems.

I used to play this game called, "Living Steel." The Aliens would always knock out a Planet's Comunications Satalites before invading. Their next step, though, was the really creative part. They engineered an airbourne virus that had a 24 hour life. This virus, once in a person, would hit certain areas of the brain that controlled how well one could adapt in society. It was known as VISR, viraly induced sociopathic response.

oh yeah.. their next step was to land unmanned drop ships full of guns in all major urban regions...

It was an RPG. The basic premise for your characters:

You are the last heroes of a Solar System called the "7 Worlds." A generation or two ago, your world was destroyed by the Terran Empire. Sympathizers in the empire got the greatest heroes of the 7 Worlds and picked them up from the battle field and put them into suspended animation.

These sympathizers were caught up by the ideals and nobility of the people of the 7 Worlds and disgusted with the corruption in their own empire. The plan was that at the right time, they would be awoken from suspended animation (possibly after the Empire Collapses on itself) and to lead the remaining people to try and rebuild a noble empire again.

Only problem.. the Spectrals (the aliens) struck and you are awoken early. Your job, Collect the few people who have not become a victim to the VISR, train them to fight, and form a resistence against the Spectrals AND the Empire. You White Wolf players should love impossible goals .p

It was a game with a very nice rich history... but the mechanics were so complicated that a lot of people avoided it. You should have seen the hit location table... there were organs listed.. heh. Did i mention it was a really deadly game? You really need to have a good grasp of small arms and squad tactics or you'll be dead fast.
