Often, I hate Dork Tower for making easy geek references and claiming them as jokes, which isn't funny.

I still keep the feed on my list, though, because of gems like this one. When it's funny, it's hilarious.

Muslims in Spain issued a fatwa against Osama bin Laden yesterday.

The fatwa said that, in accordance with the Koran, "the terrorist acts of Osama bin Laden and his organisation al-Qa'eda... are totally banned and must be roundly condemned as part of Islam".

The fatwa is believed to represent the first major condemnation of bin Laden by a mainstream Muslim organisation.

The statement was intended as a move to rehabilitate the reputation of the Spanish Muslim community after the attacks, when Islamist terrorists exploded 10 bombs on commuter trains in Madrid, killing 191 and injuring 1,500.

Flags will be flown at half-mast, bells rung and prayers said in churches and Madrid's main mosque today.

On the lot of the Hampton Motor Company is a 1969 Ferret Scout tank, looming over the other automobiles.

"[The collector] got it directly from England," lot owner Henry Marsh said. "It's English. And it was just something to play with around his estate."

The tank is no toy, but it can be bought for $25,000.

"I want it," customer Robert Bencivenga said. "I'll pay the 25 grand for it. It would get rid of a lot of enemies."

There are smoke bombs on both sides, and it's equipped with a .30-caliber machine gun. The weapons no longer work, but it has a lot of other features, such as a periscope and a revolving turret.

The tank isn't easy to operate, but it does come with a user's manual, telling the owner how to do everything from starting the engine to getting the amphibious machine into the water.

Hampton Motor Company doesn't allow test drives, but the dealer said he doesn't expect the tank to be a hard sell.

Quoth George Lucas: " I would not take a 5 or 6 year old to this. It's way too strong"

What this means: "I have hired somebody to cut out all the 'yippees' and the annoying fuzzy aliens. This means the movie may not have mostly fast-forward-special moments. Woot!"

Behind on your taxes in southern India? The city will pay drummers to sit outside your house and play until you pay up.

"They put up a spectacle outside the houses of defaulters, draw them out and explain their dues to them and the need to clear it at the earliest," said T.S.R. Anjaneyulu, municipal commissioner of Rajahmundry city.

"They don't stop until people agree to clear the dues."

The city, owed a total of 50 million rupees ($1.15 million), had been at its wits' end after sops like waiving interest and penalties had failed to recover the arrears.

The new method seems to be working, though. One week of incessant drumming has cleared 18 percent of the backlog.

[livejournal.com profile] new_brunette is reading CVs of students looking for an interview.
This guy need to make sure he doesn't let his housemate near his computer, and he REALLY needs to proofread:
"My career ambitions are to work successfully in the I like big ladies computer industry as a systems analyst."

I say that guy deserves an interview, and that [livejournal.com profile] new_brunette should bring his camera and get us some candid shots of the guy's face when he sees his own letter. That would be AWESOME.

"No one has been able to land a [big] punch on an American [aircraft] carrier for over half a century," StrategyPage notes. "There is no practical knowledge about exactly how sturdy, or not, these big ships are."

So the Navy is going to sink the USS America, to find out.

Pakistani court overturns acquittal of rapists

Pakistan's Islamic court on Friday asked five men found guilty of gang-raping a woman but later acquitted to appear before it, saying a high court that let them go had no jurisdiction to deal with the matter.

The men had been ordered to rape Mukhtaran Mai by a village council as punishment for her brother's suspected affair with a woman from the powerful Mastoi tribe. Mai's brother was also kidnapped and sodomised by Mastoi men.

The Federal Sharia Court said that a high court in the central city of Multan, which struck down a lower court decision that found the men guilty of the July 2002 rape of Mai, had no jurisdiction to rule on the case.

In its March 3 appeal hearing the Multan High Court quashed the convictions of five of the six men sentenced to death in the case, citing lack of evidence, and commuted the death sentence of a sixth man to life imprisonment.

The Sharia Court ordered all six men to appear before it to hear their appeals afresh. It also ordered eight other men acquitted in the original trial to appear before it.
