May. 12th, 2006 06:34 amToday's cover OF DOOM is a death metal band covering REM. It's exactly as awesome as it sounds.

May. 12th, 2006 09:00 amSo. Look at this and tell me it doesn't look like a hurricane forming over Lake Michigan.

(I'm quite aware there are no warm tropical seas anywhere near Michigan. It's still awesome.)

In a hypothetical future, interstellar travel and colonisation is possible. FTL is either nonexistent or still slow enough that it takes most or all of a lifetime to travel to a new planet.
How do Muslims reconcile this with the requirement to visit Mecca once in their lives?
And what direction do they face to pray on the trip (assuming it's not in cryosuspension) and once they arrive on their new extraterrestrial home?
This is the kind of thing I think of when it's a slow day at work.

EDIT: At least one set of Muslims has considered the question and issued a Fatwa. I can't located a reference to which branch of Islam they belong to, though, or a link to the original Fatwa.

May. 12th, 2006 07:58 pmUN elect new Human Rights Council, including as members China, Cuba, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
This is, remarkably enough, an improvement over the previous council, which included Sudan, Zimbabwe, Syria, Nepal, Eritrea and Ethiopia.

May. 12th, 2006 08:19 pmFor the D&D geeks out there, we have a bunch of people coming up with an interesting and original fantasy world setting based around one of the most boring and unoriginal things ever created.
And you know I'm all about taking things that suck (D&D, that monster) and making them not suck again.
If you're at all a fan of high fantasy a la China Mieville, and you know what D&D is, read the original post. The rest of the thread is up to you, if you find the original interesting.
