The baboons got stressed, the lions got fat and zoo officials worry the antelopes might have heart attacks.


After 34 days in indoor shelters, many of the animals at the Haifa Zoo got a breath of outdoor air — if not a taste of freedom — for the first time on Tuesday.

Zoo officials moved all the carnivores, bears and monkeys indoors at the start of the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, both to protect them from rocket strikes and to keep an errant missile on a retaining wall from setting them loose into Israel's third-largest city.

Innovations in liquid nitrogen transport: 230L of LN2, weighing about 200kg without counting the steel dewar it's stored in, needs to go down one story from the loading dock to the chem lab. The elevator is out of service, so a bright undergrad decides to take the stairs.

"What makes this so dangerous is the fact that the Apple power adapters do not integrate sufficient short circuit protection on the DC side. This means, when the wires touch or nearly touch, they will arc and generate a spark - not once, but again and again, as long as the adapter remains plugged into electricity. And because it happens on the DC side, it does not trigger any circuit breakers, household fuses or GFCI outlets."
