On first blush, this does appear to be the safest plan, but then your mind starts going "Hey, that means the sharp bits are the ones whipping around near his knees."
You know, the more I think about this plan, the worse it seems, no matter what bit of the snake is where.
Wonder if they're de-venomed. Doesn't necessarily say that they have to be live *and* capable of inflicting a deadly bite.
But still, even without the venom I wouldn't want them gnawing on me. And that has to give a nasty ticklish sensation in the mouth with the rattles inevitably going...
