As is the whole "There are reports that $VILLAINOUS_CHARACTER is assembling a secret army to destroy $MY_AFFILIATION! I want to join the army to save the world from the perfidious $VILLAIN!" thing.
But, you know, when you have the advantage of an omniscient narrator AND objective good and evil easily detectible in the world, then jingoism isn't nearly so bad.
Considering the amount of Robert Jordan that I *know* you've read, my only response to this cynical sideswipe at escapist fiction is a single eyebrow, raised in bemusement.
